I couldn’t believe my luck today, I have never seen a crocodile in my life and in my first sighting of this massive reptile I see the legendary white headed crocodile in #ternate inside the #danautolire
I honestly thought that this tale of a crocodile in the crater lake was an old wives tale.

Indonesia has over 17,000 islands. The most isolated of these islands are found in the Banda Sea. A complex underwater basin reaching depths of over 7000 meters. Rising from these impossible depths are a chain of volcanos, atolls, islands and reefs which stretch across three provinces of Indonesia.
This is known as Indonesias Ring of Fire. In tonight’s video i start a journey across this vast sea and discover these islands.

Adventures on the trip across East Indonesia 🇮🇩
On the last Liveaboard trip across the Banda Sea two of guests went kayaking on the this tropical island but got stuck Becuase of big waves. We went to rescue them on the speed boat but almost got caught in the surf breaks ourselves.
The island is Pulau Reong, lost in the middle of nowhere near to Wetar island. NTT

Hidden in the karst limestone labyrinth of South Sulawesi is the oldest cave painting in the world. And nearby are the second and third oldest.
@thekristianhansen and I went on an adventure together to find this 45,000 year old cave art of a wild boar. The path wasn’t easy and we got lost several times trying to find it. This is Leang Tedongnge
I wonder what else is hiding in the unexplored areas of Indonesia. Maros is quite easily accessible but how about the areas that are even more remote than this.

OLLON VALLEY - this hidden place in Sulawesi was the most incredible, beautiful and perfectly tranquil place I have been on the entire Sulawesi trip.
The valley is located in Tana Toraja regency in South Sulawesi but it’s around 5 hours drive from the regency capital, Makale. It’s a difficult road to pass and lucky for me it was dry.
But the fact that the road is unfinished makes it more special as there are no cars and hardly any people go there. That will change soon I think due to the fact that this place is absolutely stunning.
The savannahs have crisscross patterns on them from many years of grazing cattle. The scenery looks more like sumba or Komodo than anywhere else in Sulawesi and for some reason this particular valley doesn’t get much rain.

MAMASA - this rarely visited place in West Sulawesi, Indonesia was such a big surprise for me. It’s like Toraja but quieter and different. I was lucky to be invited to the house of the Bupati - however he died 10 months before and now the family is taking care and f the coffin while they save the money and prepare for the funeral.
In Mamasa they also have a hierarchy and status. This family have a very high status and so much adorn the coffin and the room in a certain way and adhere to the ancient traditions. It’s expected.
The room inside the traditional house is draped in red cloths and the coffin has the head of a horse which is a symbol of strength for the Mamasa people. This differs to Toraja who have a much closer connection with the buffalo.

Sulawesi is home to this enchanting place - Besoa Valley. With over 140 megalithic stone jars and statues of very mysterious age and origins.
Archeological survey has found that people were living here and cultivating rice as early as 8000 years ago.
This place deserves to be studied further. And I hope one day it can get UNESCO world heritage status.

This is Besoa Valley in Central Sulawesi- there are hundreds of stone Megaliths here of really mysterious age and origin.
Some have been dated 4500 years old, others at 600 years old and humans have lived here for at least 8000 years based on archeological survey.
What is clear is that a culture and civilisation lived here for a very long time and then mysteriously vanished.
Could these the same Polynesian cultures that built the easter island megaliths of the Rapa Nui? 🗿 the moai?

WHALE SHARK - these gentle giants can be found almost everyday in Gorontalo. There was a shrimp factory but now the locals have turned the shark visits into a tourist attraction. They are being fed everyday to keep them there. Do you think it’s a sustainable type of tourism or is it exploiting nature? In my opinion a balance should be struck, and I think it’s better than the locals going out and overfishing to make money.

GUNUNG SOPUTAN - one of the finest hikes in North Sulawesi and the provinces answer to Gunung Semeru = Two steps forward and one “slide” back.
A great mountain and a great hike which doesn’t get climbed too often either. I love the Minahasa highlands

GORONTALO is famous recently because it’s almost guaranteed (if you’re lucky) that the whale sharks are there. I visited this place recently on my way back down to Makassar from Manado. You can watch the latest video tonight on YouTube.
The whale sharks are here becuasw there was a shrimp processing factory on the beach. And the discarded shrimp heads were tossed into the water and it attracted these sharks.
Now it is a tourist attraction bringing people from all over Indonesia.
